Since zip-ties to identify medical marijuana plants went on sale at the Sheriff's Office last week, county citizens have continued to purchase the blue zip ties with serial numbers.

At noon Wednesday last week, the tags went on sale for the first time and the first six were purchased that day at about 1 p.m. Sales of the ties so far have generated several thousand dollars, Mendocino County Sheriff Tom Allman said.

In Willits, the Sheriff's Office front desk will no longer be open. But zip-ties can be bought from sheriff's offices in Ukiah and Fort Bragg.

When zip-ties are sold, the Sheriff's Office makes a photocopy of a state-issued medical marijuana card. Not asked for are name, address, phone number, driver's license or medical condition.

Buyers of the tags, which are good for the calendar year that they are sold in, need to bring either a California medical marijuana card which has a photograph on it or a doctor's recommendation, according to the Sheriff's Office.

An actual medical marijuana card, not a copy, needs to be presented to purchase zip-ties, Allman said.
