If this were all hempseed oil, the environmental impact would be negligible

Since Hemp fiber is more absorbent than any other natural fiber, why not use it in the containment booms they're laying in the Gulf of Mexico to clean up the petrochemical industry's latest achievement? There are news reports about using human hair to help absorb the oil.

Who could we suggest this to?

Absolutely!

Hemp was actually used in Chernobyl to help clean up the radiation contamination after their nuclear accident, precisely because it was a cheap available resource and because of its superiority to other fibers in absorbency....But then again... we wouldn't want to send the wrong message to the kids, eh?


Sadly, where would we get that hemp from but Canada that would keep the costs cheap?

Here is another idea.
Legalize hemp and cannabis and do it now because the people in that region who counted on fishing and tourism and everything else connected to those industries are now unemployed and will be for a long, long time to come.
So let them now become farmers or whatever in a new industry that could at least help to mitigate the horrible fate of these good people.

I feel horrible about this, but your right this will make people have to decide on what they need to do next and its not like they can pick up the pieces and be ok. In situations like this we do what we can.i will never understand how war can make everyday peole we see in to savages. legalization will come soon all they are doing is delaying the inevitable, the rise in young kids smoking is no different than the pressure a highschool kid faces having a bunch of beer with freinds .
