Virginia Tech announced Tuesday morning that football player Marcus Vick is suspended from school for the 2004 fall semester, effective immediately.

Vick, a redshirt sophomore from Newport News, will then incur an additional year of deferred suspension, whereby any further disciplinary action or conviction will result in automatic suspension from the university.

Athletic director Jim Weaver also informed Vick that further violations - criminal, university judicial, or athletically related - will result in his permanent dismissal from Tech athletics.

In a statement released Tuesday morning, Tech's university relations office said that the suspension was related to Vick's legal case involving high school girls, as well as a recent charge of marijuana possession.

Vick was convicted of three misdemeanor charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. That conviction is on appeal. His hearing on charges of marijuana possession and speeding is scheduled to be heard today at 2 p.m. in New Kent County.

Tech president Charles Steger said in the statement: "I concur with the actions of the university judicial system. This is a stiff penalty. Vick won't play this year and loses that year of eligibility. If there is any more trouble, his Virginia Tech career is effectively ended. But just as important, this offers a compassionate, last chance opportunity for Vick to get his personal life in order."
