Voters Approve Medical Marijuana Restrictions

Montana voters have ratified a 2011 state law severely limiting the use and distribution of medical marijuana.

The Legislature approved the law to curb what it called an out-of-control industry. The law forbids providers from compensation or reimbursing their costs, and it limits them to distributing to three users.

The bill was passed after Gov. Brian Schweitzer vetoed a repeal of a 2004 voter initiative that legalized medical marijuana. Opponents have contested the law in court and won two injunctions preventing implementation of its key provisions.

The ballot initiative was one of five voters approved Tuesday. The other measures require parental notification for minor girls' abortions, deny services for illegal immigrants, declare corporations are not people and forbid governments from issuing health insurance mandates.
