Monarch and the Milkweed made their newest offering – two flavors of truffles containing 20 milligrams of CBD – available starting at noon on Thursday.

Less than two hours later, about two dozen people had come in to buy the confections at $10 a pop.

"This has always been a goal of ours," said Andrew LeStourgeon, the chef-owner of Monarch and the Milkweed.

CBD is a legal, non-psychoactive cannabinoid derived from the cannabis plant said to have health benefits.

Monarch and the Milkweed is currently selling two varieties: "Strawberry Blonde," a vanilla/strawberry flavor, and "Andy's Mints," which LeStourgeon said is similar to a peppermint patty.

Eventually, he plans to add more flavors and to have three to five available on any given day.

LeStourgeon opened the bakery meets cocktail bar meets all-day-brunch restaurant at 111 Saint Paul St. last summer. He previously worked in the kitchens of the Hen of the Wood restaurants.

He has also spent time baking edibles for a medical marijuana dispensary, though he declined to name which one because of privacy concerns.

"Clearly, we believe in it. We believe in the health benefits of cannabis," he said.

Between the opening of Monarch and the Milkweed and the debut of the CBD confections, the Vermont state Legislature came close to a compromise that would legalize marijuana, though the regulated sale of cannabis would have been further down the line. Even many lawmakers who supported a regulated marijuana market had concerns about the sale of edibles.

But LeStourgeon said he pays little attention to the day-to-day twists and turns in marijuana politics.

"It'll be fully legal in 10 years or less," he predicted.

"It's legal, it's safe," he said. "People should do their own research."
