Washington Moves To Ban Marijuana From The State's Bars

Pot and booze don't mix, apparently.

Washington's Liquor Control Board voted Wednesday to begin drafting rules that will keep newly legalized marijuana out of the state's bars.

"It is important that the Board clarify now that consuming marijuana in a state liquor-licensed establishment is not acceptable," Board Chair Sharon Foster said during a Liquor Control Board meeting. "Public consumption of marijuana is clearly illegal under Washington's new law."

Passed by Washington voters in last year's elections, Initiative 502 gives the Liquor Control Board the power to guide just how the use of recreational marijuana will be regulated in the state.

"This measure authorizes the state liquor control board to regulate and tax marijuana for persons twenty-one years of age and older, and add a new threshold for driving under the influence of marijuana," the text of the new law states.

While I-502 gives the board the power to issue $103 citations to any person found smoking marijuana in a public place, some bars in the state have begun flouting the regulations by allowing customers to partake in pot in designated areas, the Seattle Times reported.

Citing the fear that the addition of marijuana smoking at bars will result in greater risks for drivers, the board plans to put forth a resolution that specifically lays out a ban on pot at watering holes.

For Frankie Schnars, the owner of Frankie's, a bar in Olympia that now allows members to smoke weed in a private area, the prospect of new restrictions misses the point of the I-502.

"What the hell is the difference," Schnarrs told the Times, "if somebody smokes in the parking lot or inside?"

A public hearing will be held in June on the rules the board comes up with, and a vote will be held in July on whether to approve the restrictions.
