Water from rain barrels

I am considering buying a rain barrel for use with my garden but I wonder if there are any issues with using this water. More specifically, can there be a problem witht the water since it is coming off my roof and having asbestos shingles? Also, if that isn't a problem can I use those pellets that will keep skeeters from laying their eggs in the water?

Don't know about the asbestos shingles, but I believe rainwater is a bit acidic, so you would have to be sure to pH it.
