What determines the spacing in tiers of leaves. Is it strain specific? Is it related to phorsphrous? What determines the distance of stem between the new tiers of leaves?

controll the environment; controll the plant. short and fat is where it's at.

The enviroment is extremely important but strain and genetics does have a part in internodal stretch. Pure sativas will "always" have a longer stretch between internodes than a pure indica will.

You can also reduce internodal length when you supercrop the central stalk (snapping the hurd).
