Normal MJ plants are day (actually dark) dependent. After the plant reaches maturity it will flower when the amount of uninterrupted dark hours reach a certain length (generically considered to be 12).

An autoflowering plant is not dark-length dependent and will flower after the plant reaches a certain age regardless of the light/dark cycle. For this reason most people keep them under strong 18/6 light from day one for maximum yield.
