This one enraged me like no anti-pot ad has for a long time...
It starts with shots of three different teenagers, looking at their most cherished possessions (a guitar, a nice car, some sports trophies and medals). Then it sequentially shows each one taking these things outside, or to the fireplace, and setting them on fire while they stare glassy-eyed. Then a voice comes on and says "marijuana costs you more than you think..."
Ok... What... The... FUCK. Not only do I not know exactly what this ad is implying, but anything that it possibly could be implying is outrageously off-base. Are they saying that you will sell your most cherished possessions for weed money because you will become an addict? Or is it that you won't have the motivation or skill to be able to play an instrument, or win a medal? I don't know. Please, ONDCP, help me understand what the hell that was all about...
The only reason ads like these exist is to scare little kids and parents, who aren't educated enough to make the connection that these ads are BULLSHIT, into think pot is just as dangerous as crack or heroin. And it's working, sadly... the public at large still believes it is a good thing that smoking pot is a crime. Meanwhile, I've NEVER seen an ad warning against the dangers of binge drinking, but it's kills thousands every year. It's good to see the ONDCP and the Bush administration have their priorities straight...
