The latest Marquette University Law School poll released this week found 59 percent of respondents support fully legalizing marijuana in Wisconsin and regulating it like alcohol.

State Representative Melissa Sargent (D-Madison) says lawmakers should be paying attention to a growing wave of support for the concept. "It's a pretty impressive number of folks that have come forward and said that they very much believe marijuana should be treated as alcohol is in our state."

Sargent says the people of the state have been curious about the idea in the past, as other states like Colorado moved to legalize marijana for recreational use. She argues that interest is now reaching a "critical mass" that should not be ignored.

Previous attempts to pass even a medical marijuana bill have been met with stiff resistance, but Sargent contends opponents are running out of excuses not to seriously consider the issue — especially as more states begin to explore legalizing recreational use. "It's not a matter of if this is going to happen in Wisconsin, it's simply a matter of when."
