The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has arrested two Zimbabweans in connection with 11 skilfully packaged Europe-bound contrabands of cannabis that it intercepted recently at Lusaka International Airport.

DEC spokesperson, Rosten Chulu who confirmed the development in Lusaka yesterday said the duo was arrested with another consignment of cannabis concealed in 10 giraffe-shaped artefacts and 10 hut-like curios. Mr Chulu named those arrested as Phillis Sibande Mapingire, 24 and Lynnette Makai, 24 both of Zimbabwe. They were arrested in Livingstone. More than a week ago, 11 similar contrabands were seized as unaccompanied luggage, at Lusaka International Airport en-route to Europe on two different days. "The DEC has arrested persons behind the trafficking of unaccompanied compressed cannabis weighing 22 kg which was seized at Lusaka International Airport and Livingstone Zambia Postal Services on December 19 and 21 2007 respectively. "The two Zimbabwean suspects were arrested with another consignment of compressed cannabis. This was concealed in 10 giraffe artefacts and 10-hut-shaped artefacts with 160 packets of compressed cannabis inside the curios, weighing 40kg," he said.

In the first incidence a consignment of 10 wooden-hut-shaped artefacts each had eight machine-sealed packs of well-compressed cannabis concealed in between the dugout wooden decorations which were intercepted and seized at the airport. In the second episode, Mr Chulu had said, a hippo-shaped wooden curio with eight packets of compressed cannabis concealed inside was destined for Waterford in the Republic of Ireland via British Airways. In the entire scenario the packages were carefully wrapped with plastics and labelled "fragile" while the inside of the wooden decorations were lined with foil paper to avert detection by a detector. Mr Chulu said the suspects would appear in court soon.

He said that the Commission was alert and it wanted to ensure that its citizens or foreign nationals did not use Zambia as either a transit point or exporter of illegal drugs.
