MMJ county ID card or just the MD's note?

I got my MD letter of approval today. I asked them where I needed to go to get my county card and they looked at me like I was stupid. They said nobody does that, they just use the letter when they go to dispensaries. I was thinking more along the lines of having the card on hand in case LEO ever gets involved with me (traffic stop gone bad, leo to house for barking dogs, Fire dept responding to something and discovering grow, etc.). I know that the letter should be enough but having the government's certification to show should also be worth something. Right? Or am i just stupid?

at any rate, being a long time rule follower, i decided to go online and look up how to get a card from my county. It costs $166!! That may explain why they said nobody uses it. so, for the California folks here, do any of you use the Co. card or do you just use your physician's letter? any of you have any stories about what you used with regards to law enforcement interactions?

thx

I live in Riverside County and because I am disabled the card costs me around 70.00 a year. I just feel safer with one and it makes me that much more legal in the eyes of the local authorities.

You don't say what state you're in, so I can only talk about my home state, California.

In California, the rules and the enforcement of rules vary GREATLY by county, and even city. I assume that if I'm holding, I can be charged with a felony - because they can if they want to. And, it doesn't matter how much I have, or what kind of documents I have. It is up to the cop on the street. He is judge and jury. So, your question is more about "how to deal with the police".
I would recommend that you search THAT term in Google: "how to deal with the police". There is a great video put out by (I think) the ACLU on that topic. Watch it more than once.
The thing to remember about dealing with a cop is that they are predators. They prey on criminals. And each cop has a different definition of 'criminal'. Since you don't know what an individuals definition is, treat all cops like dangerous predators. Now, I'm not against predators - we need them. But, you have to know how to deal with them or you may become prey. I avoid human predators: cops, lawyers, judges, pimps, drug dealers, killers, thieves ... these are all predators to be avoided, and each takes a different strategy. Have and carry your paperwork - and hope you never need it.

Google the term, watch the ACLU video. More than once. Memorize the verbiage they give you in it.
Never, as in never: 1) answer questions, 2) give permission for a search, 3) resist in any way.

Biggest rule to remember is to STFU. Identify yourself, ask if you can leave. State that you do not give up your rights to self incrimination and won't answer questions, state that you do NOT give permission to search your person, your car, or your home. Ask if you can leave. Do what they tell you to do. Ask if you can leave. Do not resist. STFU.

I am a MMJ patient in San Diego county, California. My wife is also a patient. We both originally had only the regular doctors recommendation. At one point a couple years ago I had just harvested some white widow which was in Jars and cured.
I also had two mother plants, two plants still in the ground with a few buds on them, seven clones, and a bag of fifty medicinal cookies in the freezer.
A person who had helped me in my small grow operation was living in my studio, (rent free) moved without any notice.
I began to notice things missing. So I changed the locks on the ped gate and the studio.
One night a few weeks later I came home and The ex helper pulled up in front of me.
He was yelling and screaming at me that I locked him out and he demanded to be able to take something of extreme importance to him.
I told him no problem and had to ask him to get out of my face so I could get the new keys that were in the house.
I went in the house and heard lots of noise and he left. Unknown to me my wife had called 911 as she thought he was beating
me up.
The SD county Sheriff showed up. I showed them the broken gate and the door that he kicked down. She asked if she could look around in the house and the property. I told her no, I do not submit to a search of my house or property.
The Sheriff looked through the open door and saw my two Mother plants. She said it was necessary to call her Sheriff DEA unit .
I told my wife to get our Doctors recommendation. She refused to let her get them and told us to sit down on the ground. I was there with my walking cane and told her I was disabled and if I got on the ground that I could not get up without them helping lift me up.
She got us two of our patio chairs.
When the Sheriff DEA officer arrived he asked me if I had a doctors recommendation and or the State of California MMJ Id card or both?
He also asked for permission to search the house and property and vehicles. I also told him No, I do not submit to a search.
He threatened to arrest both me and my wife. I told him I don't think you can do that legally as I had less than the number of allowed plants.
Being intimidated by him and threat of arresting my wife I finally allowed him to enter the house and look around.
He escorted my wife into the house to get our Doctors recommendations.
He led her out and made her sit back down and proceeded to search the house.
After he looked around he told me if I had produced our California MMJ Cards, he would have only looked around and handed our cards back and left without taking anything. This is the key point; He said for what I was growing and had on hand, my regular doctors recommendation was useless.
He dumped my seven clones into a trash bag, took my cookies, and my jars of white widow. He also cut down my two mother plants and the three plants outside in the dirt.
He said he was not going to arrest us but was confiscating the above stuff. I think he is still eating my cookies.

So to sum it all up, I strongly recommend both the regular doctors recommendation and the State of California MMJ ID card which is issued by the local County medical offices. It is about $166 and they cut it in half if you are on Medical.
He never looked in my locked storage shed to find the Northern Lights in flower and ready to harvest.

You know, when I was growing up (I am 61 years old) I was always taught that if you are in trouble and need help that a policeman is the guy to go to. They would help you. Back then, that was true.

It's not any more.

Cops are just gang bangers. They are out for the power and money. The LAST people you want to call for help is the police. It's just like calling the Hells Angels, or the Crips. It just adds to your misery.

I feel bad for my country. It never used to be this way people. We used to have constitutional rights to protect us against unreasonable search and seizure. We, the people, used to be in charge of our government. Now we are just subjects.

Well I live Ventura co. In ca and I've been stop by vta pd.and I only showed them my letter from the Dr. Office. And let me go but all cops are different. Butnyour the second mention about the county card wow it costs that much 166,00 no wonder they don't tell you about the card no one can afford it.if they lowered. Down the price I think people couldafford then if it's under 40.00 dollars! Nice emailing you.

Yes, Adriana, all cops are different. There are good ones, and bad ones. They are people.
BUT, there are two types of people who become cops. One wants to help. The other likes the feel of the weight of that gun and badge; makes him feel like a real man.

When we lived in the Bay Area (San Francisco) my wife got into a very tough spot with her car breaking down in a bad area. A half dozen Hells Angels stopped and helped her out of a real jam. They were very helpful and kind.
She got lucky.
The mood could have been very different and she could have gotten hurt.

Point is. Cops or Hells Angels. They are gangs. Sometimes the pack turns on you. Sometimes the ignore you. Sometimes they help you.

From my standpoint it is better to stretch a bit financially and get the California MMJ ID card.
I had the San Diego County, ca Sherrif visit me one night and they took all my harvest, my bags of cookies, my clones and three mother plants. I had less then 15 total plants. The cop said if I had showed him the California MMJ card issued by the county, they would have turned away and left everything alone. So, if you are growing, get the state card

Well, to each his own I guess.

I think that the gov't collects enough info about me that I and am resistive to voluntarily give it away.
Also, I don't, as a rule, discuss my medical problems with anyone except my wife and my doctor.

It has been proven that data is not safe any more. Anyone with mediocre hacking skills can get in them.

I will say way back in 02 you had to dedicate a whole day and bring a stack of medical records

Wasn't so easy back then

Good for you that you have already your medical card. Others have difficulties in acquiring it. I have mine too a couple of weeks ago.

I got my recommendation from the Doc and two cards for $69 - on line. Yeah, it sounds weird, but it's true. The first card was $20 and the second one $10 if purchased at the same time as the first. I figured I was bound to misplace or lose one, given that weed makes me especially forgetful, so I sprung for it.

Some online Cali docs require Skyping, plus uploading a photo plus government ID; some just uploading a photo and license or other government ID, and no Skype thing. They just call you. I'd check out on line sources. You can generally find recommendations via informational websites or medical dispensary collectives' websites. The collective I applied through was $39 for the doc's recommendation, which included a formal seal, signature, and letterhead. I got the cards to make my life easier and because I want to grow.

Medical marijuana card is must to buy marijuana legally. I recently buy my card in just $59
Not true.
No matter the kind of cannabis you want, you’ll need to visit a state-licensed recreational dispensary. The agency that regulates marijuana, the California Bureau of Cannabis Control, has a complete and updated list of licensed dispensaries on its website.

You’ll need a valid ID or driver’s license. And you’ll also likely need cash as most dispensaries don’t accept checks or credit cards.
