Strain : Vanilla Kush (Kashmir Hash Plant x Kush) by Barney's Farm
Type : Indica dominant
Stage: Week 5 flowering
Environment : Secret Jardin grow tent with coco/perlite mix
Nutes: Chemical nutes I got with setup (Nutrient A + B + MPK)

OK, bare with me, I'm going to piece this journal together from another forum. However, I accidentally deleted the very early photos, so the journal will start from a few weeks in.

Special mention needs to go to the Purple Wreck. That plant is really hardy, and very easy to work with. The perfect strain for a beginner like myself. The Vanilla Kush is a little trickier, but more details on that later.

You might have noticed that the plants are a little on the small side, and that the leaves are a light green. Thatis because I was basically starving them without realizing it. I did manage to get it dialed in later in the grow though. Also the quality of the photos will improve later in the journal as well. I was using my phone's camera for the first few weeks.

About a week later, I transplanted them into bigger pots. Not exactly sure on the size, but they are about 20L pots if I go according to diameter. (30cm x 35cm) At this point, the Vanilla Kush started showing signs of distress.

More to follow soon...

Re: TheBlaze's first grow: Purple Wreck and Vanilla Kush (400w HPS)

At this point the Vanilla Kush seems to be doing better after the transplant, but that won't last.

After doing some reading up, and with the help of others, we narrowed it down to one of three problems. (or a combination of all 3)

- Cal/mag deficiency
- Overwatering
- Heat stress

So I backed off the watering, bumped up Nutrient B and moved the VK further from the light. It worked.

Hi Blaze, what's up man?
Great little setup you got going, Plants are looking good, a little small at 45 days from seed like you mentioned, but they look healthy in the first photo's. I think your on the right track with current plant issues (overwatering and heat seem like the culprits) and she will bounce right back, stronger than ever. Good luck with the grow, and if you have any questions just post em in you journal and I or many others will chime in with help, and point you in the right direction.

Day 21 of flowering

At this point the Purple Wreck has a glorious stink. It has a strong slightly rotten fruit smell, while the vanilla kush is more herbal smelling.

Re: TheBlaze's first grow: Purple Wreck and Vanilla Kush (400w HPS)

A few days later I had this to say about the PW.

Copied from another forum:

"The Purple Wreck is becoming stinky as hell. I've never smelt anything that potent. The smell is overly ripe fruit (think mango or paw paw) with a bit of fuel mixed in. I took them out on Tuesday to feed, and my hand accidentally brushed up against some of the flowers. My hand literally reeked for about an hour after just that brief contact. The Vanilla Kush is almost odourless in comparison."

The purple wreck is truly an amazing strain. Getting frosty ... who sprinkled the icing sugar.

Day 37 flowering

I removed some of the bottom fan leaves on both plants, as they were turning yellow and dying off.

And that's it for now.

I'll update this thread with photos in a few days again.

Hi Blaze,

Followed the link from your introduction page, so welcome to 420!

Very nice recovery with the plant early plant issues. They look great. I look forward to following along in your journal and enjoying the journey with you. Agree with you that growing is such a rewarding endeavor. Thanks for sharing your grow with us.

Be well and happy growing.

Re: TheBlaze's first grow: Purple Wreck and Vanilla Kush (400w HPS)

Wow, reaaally nice how they recovered from the slow start. Gives me hope, as I had exactly the same problem (a mixture of heat and too little nutes).

The Purple Wreck really does look like someone dropped a pack of sugar over it. Awesome!

The smell isn't a problem though, right? Coz that carbon filter looks like it's getting the last particle of smell out of the tent.

By the way, I don' think that overwatering was one of your problems. You're using coco/perlite right? From what I understand, coco together with perlite is pretty much impossible to overwater...

Re: TheBlaze's first grow: Purple Wreck and Vanilla Kush (400w HPS)

Thanks for all the encouraging comments guys.

KingJohn, my apologies on the photos. I will read your how-to and brush up on the rules again.

Doopie, thanks brother. I agree, the Purple Wreck is a stunning plant. My next order of seeds is going to be exclusively Reserva Privada. They have some interesting strains as well. Particularly The OG#18. Can't wait to get my hands on those beans.

As for overwatering, I can't be 100% sure that was the problem. The Purple Wreck was doing great in the same conditions. I did read that Vanilla Kush is particularly susceptible to heat and also needs extra cal/mag. So it is more likely that. That is why I said it is a bit of a tricky strain. Maybe not best suited for noobs such as myself.

Day 38 flowering

The smell of the Purple Wreck has changed. The fruit smell is definitely still there, but it doesn't smell quite so rotten anymore. Also, there is a definite undertone of coffee, or one of those chocolate coffee liqueur sweets. It smells delicious. The smell of the Vanilla Kush is still rather bland in comparison.

Some of the pistils on the PW have turned amber. Also, have a look at how hairy the VK is.
