1st Grow - Fingers Crossed

Hi Team,

I'm growing Cannabis in a grow tent

Jungle room tent 10x5' 6'high
2 x 600w hps lights
10" extractor fan with temperature & speed settings
Small oscillating fan at this stage, will get more when needed.
Growing in Coco Coir @ 5.8ph

Temperature is around 77 degrees & RH is at around 55% (having some issues with keeping this up)

I Currently have 12 clones but whatever doesn't fit in the scrog won't go to waste, I'll keep them in veg state in another tent and will probably make more clones from it.

This is basically a practice run and i don't have high expectations when it comes to yield, but would like to learn from mistakes made this time round and hopefully learn a lot more for next time :)

I've seen a lot of videos on YouTube yet none of them told me when to start topping, i'll post up some photos soon of the size of the clones with hopes of someone giving me some advice.

Thanks in advance :D

They have been in Coco Coir for 5 days now, and are 3.5" out of the soil to the terminal shoot.

Well clones typically alternate nodes. Normally unwound suggesting at the 3rd or 4th node. However idk about clones . Personally in would just top now. So long as you have 2 or more robust growth tips.

Hiya and welcome to the family, only doing my second run myself but sounds like you've at least done your basic research and homework.

On the topic of topping, I can't give you any sort of useful answer, too new with this particular plant myself. But I will say, as a 30+ year veggie gardener, ask any 3 gardeners a question, you'll get 3 different answers and 3 people insisting that 2 people are idiots. Listen to what others have to say, but ultimately once you get going do what feels right for you.

For now, I'll give you the same advice someone gave me in my first journal. Forget about numbers for this run, focus on having fun and getting the plants to harvest alive. The rest will come with practice and time.

That's a good question. I've had a hand full of clones and didn't top any of them. They grew way too tall so thank you for that note to self moment.

Sure thing doggy daddy! Topping a clone is more or less the same. However because of the alternating nodes you only get one growth per node as opposed to 2. So if you want 4 arms on a clone top after node 4 just before 5. Whereas on a main stalk 2 nodes is sufficient. Although the first node only has a 25 percent chance of budding and the second 50% (If I'm rembering what furci said correctly) when left un topped. So I would still top above node 4 leaving the 4th node and 3rs and stripping all growth below. If that makes sense lol

Is this drooping normal? also what is causing the leaf to turn like that?
is it cal? iron?
running a 600w MH bulb 500mm above top of the plant also have an extraction fan constantly on.
5.8ph growing in coco coir 18/6 ec 0.8 giving it nutes every 2nd water,
temp is 19deg-25deg Celsius and RH is at 38-55% any help would be great.

Not an expert but a few plants and alot of reading under my belt. Take my opinion with a grain of salt until someone wiser shows up and confirms or corrects.

The claw hooked leaf tips look like nitrogen toxicity to me, I always get a bit cause I run a borderline hot mix, as long as its mild it shouldn't be a major problem but you may want to lower any nutes dosage a bit until they get bigger and can handle it. If growing in supersoil or similar, best advice is back of a bit on your compost/fertilizer next batch.

The spiraling leaf growth pattern is "normal" I get it often, usually indicates a plant that is growing fast, sign of nutrient abundance, again points to nutes/medium maybe being a bit too strong for current plant stage but usually not a major issue, should normalize in a few days with new growth but keep an eye on it and update if it gets really unusual looking.

Drooping can be caused by over watering, under watering, heat, the plants normal "sleep" cycle at lights out, and a few dozen other things. Watering issues are usually the problem, if you watered recently, make sure you let them get REALLY dry before watering again. If you haven't watered recently, give the girls a drink.

Good luck and don't act on my opinions without checking at least one other source.

@EndItAll,

Thanks man, fuck mate they best hang on tight because i thought it might of been a deficiency and gave them more nutrients ahahaha
Could be over watering but i only water to see about 10-20% drain out the bottom and have only ever watered these things 3 times, twice with nutes 1 just ph'd water the medium is coco coir and i was knuckle deep and it was dry before watering..... maybe next time ill wait till they show signs of needing water to give me a better indication of when to water? haha too many newbie mistakes.

Appreciate your time :) Thanks

OH and did you notice the leaf with the weird spots on it?

Lol, took me a while to get the hang of watering, and my medium and setup is unorthodox (similar to super soil but different enough to matter) so there's very little info out there that I don't have to experiment and adjust everything to fit my needs. For example, when I water, if I see ANY runoff I have learned I have over watered. My mix retains ALOT of water and if I saturate to the point of runoff my roots choke out.

Just remember, it's always easier to correct under watering and under feeding than overdoing either. Less is often more.

I assume you mean the browning along the spine of the large fan leaf in the first pic.

Not sure enough to make a statement, but I suspect phosphorus toxicity, perhaps magnesium deficiency. On this subject tho I am really not confident enough to say more than that.

They're looking alot healthier i'll let them dry out till they're begging for water to give me a better indication of when to water :)

Just wondering if its time to move my plants into bigger pots? Currently sitting 0.5 gallon pots, and roots are starting to show down below, ive topped some of these and am going to start low stress training them after they recover from topping, slight drooping in some of the plants...

Personally I would wait a few more days before transplanting. Aim for the balance between root bound and thick enough root ball to not crumble. The stress from being a bit cramped for a couple days is much faster to recover than the easily fatal stress of a rootball that got pulled apart due to insufficient structural integrity. Keep in mind that people keep happy healthy root bound mothers for long periods, and don't make hasty decisions.

Also any you've topped should be given a couple days at least to recover before adding more stress by transplanting.

Likewise after you transplant give it a couple days at least before you start LST. One stress source at a time unless urgent circumstances force your hand. A couple days here can save a couple weeks or even months later.

Its taken a while to grow but you can see the difference between topped and untopped, its coming along now :) So happy, i purchased some 15ltr pots and some coco coir with perlite so the next few weeks should hopefully be interesting, any thoughts?
