Germination time

I soaked 1 x malowi seed for a few hours (until sunk) and planted into a jiffy pellet. Also have placed 1 x malowi seed in damp paper towel in zip bag. Approching day 3 and no sign of germination.

Just wondering if anyone has had issues with large dark seeds? Soaked one was aboit twice normal size seed. Hopefully just needs some more time as still just early days

Awsome thanks. Almost pitch black now it has sucked in water. Was just a very large and solid seed so prob will take some time. Usually got tap root within 1-2 days on paper towel so thought would ask.

Also read on a seed shops site they say not to sow seeds in jiffy pel,ets due to ph issues. Thinking it can be ignored and used. Makes transplants easier when going into bigger pot.

Jiffys work fine, you can soak them in pH'ed water if that is an issue.

Root riot sponge plugs are better, but also more expensive.

Still hasn't popped. Whats the longest time you have seen it take to get a tap root?

Seeds have been kept moist whole time and weather has been warm. In another week if no show will keep them aside try pop the remaining.

Was still a solid seed yesterday no sign of germination. So performed some surgery.... with a razor blade removed most of the husk coating, alse thinned up the edging on the seam line (where seeds split) also removed end and left exposed the white embryo only very small amount was visible. Embryo was not touched or damaged. Placed back in paper towel.

Next day SUCCESS!!! A taproot has emerged from the hole where surgery was performed and seed split along seam that was thinned.

Have performed surgery on remaining seed so hopefully same results. Seeds are definitely viable they are just extremely thick shelled.
