Need Info On A Light

Hey im just wondering what kind of light this is and what the silver box is and how how many plants it would be able to handle if i had it hanging up top and had 4 small cfl bulbs around the sides, how many could they handle to grow?? All i know is it says 400Watts on the bulb no rude comments please im new to this my friend gave me the bulb all it came with was the bulb and the silver box..

I have 2 Fans will that be enough?
Im looking to produce as many as i can with this 1 big bulb and 4 small cfls bulbs how many do you think i could?
Can it be used for Veg & Flowering?
How far away should it be from the plants its at about 7-8 inches from the seedling i have going.. thanks for any help in advance..

You have a 400watt Mercury Vapor Lamp - How it works & history

The silver box is a ballast, that adjusts the electricity for the bulb.

You can grow a few plants under that, no problem. Get a reflective hood for it!

You won't need the Cfls, but you could use them to start off seedlings

Thanks Richard... and i noticed its hotter coming from the sides of the bulb not from the top? What would be the best position for the plants?

Sorry meaning would it be better to hang the bulb sideways so the side of the bulb is over the plants or just hang it so the top hangs over the plants?

Hanging the bulb sideways is better - Think Streetlights - A reflector hood will direct the beams downward.

If heat is an issue, use the Cfls at a few inches away until the plants are bigger and more robust.
