I add cfl s all over the place for supplemental light, seems to work great. If they start getting too bushy I'll concentrate the light up top in order to get that vertical growth. I ll keep mine as close as possible, like 6" away as not to cause heat stress. Hope that help in any way, good luck
Sorry no experience yet with led s yet, but I hear they are way better then cfl s,depending on the quality of led light and the spectrum covered.

Yeah, if you're used to placing CFLs exactly where you need the light, having an LED array 18" away from the tops does make you wonder about how to get enough light to the bases. I would think making sure that the plants are nice and open would be a good first step.
And my solution for everything is more aluminum foil.
