BISMARCK, N.D. - The Senate approved a bill today to help reduce the cost to the state to expand the state's industrial hemp production

Sen. Jerry Klein, says five producers produced 70 acres of the crop last year making North Dakota the fifth largest grower in the country.

This year, the state could grow as many as 3500 acres.

The Senate approved a bill charging producers a flat rate of 150 dollars, plus 25 dollars per acre.

"Understanding this isn't quite enough to make the program totally pay for its way, it is going a long way to get this thing going," said Klein.

While hemp looks like marijuana, it doesn't contain the compound that users smoke to get high.

Hemp can be to make oil, rope, lotions and more.
