Once upon a time, hemp was ubiquitous. The "king of fiber-bearing plants" was used in sailcloth, cordage and more. Then "reefer madness" and the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 effectively killed the industry, despite a brief revival during World War II.

Since then, the plant's association with drug culture has limited hemp use, but times are changing. The legalization of medical or even recreational marijuana in 26 states is also leading to a resurgence in hemp research, even here in Florida.

Last week, Gov. Rick Scott signed the Industrial Hemp Pilot Projects bill into law, which will permit Florida A&M University and the University of Florida to conduct research projects on cultivating industrial hemp in the rural areas of the state. Similar laws have been adopted by at least 19 states, with more than 30 colleges and universities pursuing research.

After stigmatizing the plant for so long, there is much to relearn.
