What started as a plan to build a passive solar house for Erika Binger turned into a passion to build a home made out of hemp on Avondale Road.

What the 27-year-old didn't know was it would take more than her dreams to make the home happen.

Binger found that out when she went to pick up her building permit.

"They were like, no, honey, you need so much more than your conviction, basically," she said.

Binger soon enlisted the help of Alembic Studio.

"We've been building houses all over the country, but we've been importing it from the Netherlands or the UK. But Erika's house is going to be the first time we get to use American-grown hemp," said Luly Abraira. "Hemp is the non-psychoactive cannabis plant, and, so, you have all of the different layers to the plant. And, after you peel it away, in the inside is the woody core. That's called the hurd, and that's what we use for construction. So, it's actually a byproduct."

With the help of Alembic Studio, Binger broke ground in October 2016 and hopes to complete the house by winter 2017/2018.

She's also enlisted the help of several others to complete the project.

"Something notable about this house is that there's a lot of chicks working here," said Binger. "Part of this project has been bringing women on board and using education to empower women."

While the current batch came from Kentucky, Abraira hoping the recent law change will encourage others to get into the growing and building business locally.

"The hope is as more farmers start to grow it, more processing facilities will start to get equipped with the right equipment and we'll be able to meet the demand of the more and more people who are interested in building hemp homes," said Abraira.

Alembic Studio is also hosting a workshop to give people information about building hemp homes.
