Farmers across North Dakota could be growing some new green, as hemp crops expand across the state.

Farmers trekked to Pembina County on Wednesday to learn more about the budding hemp business in the state.

Most farms are growing hemp for the seeds as part of a pilot program.

While it's a rapidly growing industry, a North Dakota State University crop agronomist says it's not easy to harvest those valuable seeds.

"Seedling mortality can be as high as 60, 70, 80 percent even under fairly good conditions," said Burton Johnson, NDSU Agronomist.

Farmers grew 70 acres last year, while seedlings sprouted on more than 3,000 acres this year.

The pilot program's future depends on the United States Farm Bill set to expire next year.
