It's the latest health and nutrition "wow crop" to come out of our farmer's fields, but perhaps a bit misunderstood.

Industrial Hemp is making a comeback after its debut during WWII, but now, the plant promises more uses than just rope and t-shirts.

Just outside Callaway, Minnesota a farmer field day for a crop unlike anything our grandfathers raised.

Farmers from the area joined hemp producers from Minnesota and Canada, as White Earth members proudly unveiled their new venture.

Industrial Hemp, fiber varieties and grain varieties for food; seed and oil.

It is very comparable, the oil is comparable to flaxseed oil, or other salad oils, people mix it into shakes or smoothies or just take it directly, a teaspoon like cod liver oil," said Jonathan Wenger, University of Minnesota.

Those who have called the reservation home stand in the middle of white earth's new economic and cultural hope a venture of using their land to grow industrial hemp.

"I hope to see this take hold in Minnesota and White Earth, get some manufacturing and processing mills going," said Adam Woltjer, White Earth Natural Resources.

Those coming on Wednesday to check out Minnesota's newest crop, local farmers from our region who are curious but who are willing to give this crops a chance.

Noreen Thomas of the 5th generation Clay County Farm, doubting Thomas is not only curious about producing hemp she and her farm are likely willing to be some of the growing number of farmers willing to give this a shot.

"The potential is there, it is so new, but as a producer you have to look at potential markets," said Thomas.

Don't worry about marijuana growing alongside the industrial hemp.

The two would fight like cats and dogs.

"They are not going to plant it adjacent or within a field of hemp because the pollen would contaminate the marijuana plants," said Thomas.

33 hemp producers in Minnesota are growing 1200 acres of hemp.

The start of what could be, the next talk about crop to combine.

Canada got going into the Industrial Hemp business 20 years ago, and has producers scattered across its provinces.
