Registration ends Wednesday for Cornell Cooperative Extension's field workshop on growing industrial hemp in New York.

The program will be held at noon and repeated at 6 p.m. Thursday at Cavallaro Farms, 442 Big Island Road in Goshen. Cavallaro is among the handful of farms selected by the state to trial best practices for growing and processing hemp. Research on the crop's cultivation is also being conducted at SUNY Sullivan.

The goal is to develop hemp as a viable new crop in New York. It is used to produce clothing, building materials, fuel and paper, among other consumer products.

The hour-long workshop will review planting and production techniques and feature a harvest demonstration. The permitting process for 2018 will also be detailed.

Registration can be done online at ccorangecounty.org or by calling 344-1234. The cost is $15 for members of the Cooperative Extension agriculture program and $30 for nonmembers.
