Two months after Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill categorizing industrial hemp as an agricultural commodity, interested growers will have the opportunity to learn more about the growing process.

An open house and information session will be held from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at 2095 State Route 26 in Endicott.

Speakers at the event will include Vinay Ganti, of Southern Tier Hemp; Janice Degni, of Cornell Cooperative Extension; and Pete Shafer and Chip Shafer, co-owners of Nanticoke Gardens, where the first industrial hemp crop in Broome County in 80 years has recently been planted.

Officials said the meeting will include information on how to navigate the process of license application, security at the growing location, acquiring plants and connecting with a buyer.

This comes three years after Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo helped pass legislation for New York state's industrial hemp program in 2014. She wrote a bill in 2016 that expanded the program to allow for the transportation, processing, distribution and sale of hemp grown for research.
