Cuomo Defends NY State's Medical Marijuana Program

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday recognized that the state's slow moving medical marijuana program is not "perfect," but said he'd rather err on the side of caution than move it along too quickly.

Eighteen months after signing the Compassionate Care Act into law, the state's medical marijuana plan went into effect last month.

Advocates, who have long complained that the program is to restrictive, say that the lethargic roll out has resulted in large geographical areas not being served and have look to expand the program.

At a press conference in Dunkirk, Cuomo defended the program.

"The system just started. We moved very quickly The system is up. It's working. Most accounts are it's working well," Cuomo told reporters. "Is it perfect? No. But you also have to remember, you're dispensing marijuana and you've got to be careful, and I'd rather be a little bit more careful then have the reverse situation where we were a little reckless and there are now holes in the system and people who are getting marijuana shouldn't be getting marijuana."

As POLITICO New York has previously reported, companies that were awarded licenses to grow and sell medical marijuana to severely ill people say that the program's slow roll out was expected.

Yes like the people who should not have it will want that low quality cannabis. They will just visit there local dealer and get some real meds. Like always

No doubt. Cuomo and his roll-out are both JUNK.

And you are correct. There's so much high quality product out on the street, it doesn't take too long to find the strain that works best for one's afflictions. And once one has found that source, usually that source is a good source for a good amount of time going forward. IF that source is not "dependable", then go to your local "social establishment" and find your next source. They're only a phone call or a five-minute walk away...

Yup, this "war" continues to be a great war our illustrious (and not-so-trusted) representatives are "fighting".

Question: Who actually is the ENEMY --- Cannabis or the AMERICAN PUBLIC ?????????

I don't really think OUR government wants to admit it but WE ARE THE ENEMY ---- not the plant.

And if murdering your enemy is not in the plans (but certainly can be and has been), then the ENEMY NEEDS TO BE CONTROLLED.

That's OUR government's take on its citizens ---- TOTAL CONTROL of our lives.
