City Of Victoria Moving To Regulate Its 30 Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

With the federal government still possibly years away from legalizing the drug, the city has taken action, introducing a number of regulations to govern the growing industry.

"So these are the really popular golden honey mist. They come in sativa and indigo flavored and non. They work as a sub lingual spray."

Justin Hughes offers up options for various cannibis products at the Trees Dispensary.

"It's just a tincture it's a quick administration in a short life time."

Business is brisk.

This is the third storefront for the company, one of 30 dispensers in Victoria.

In some neighbourhoods, there is one literally around each corner.

That's prompting the city to move to introduce regulations to minimize the impact, according to mayor Lisa Helps.

"The guideline of no dispensary within a certain amount of distance of another, they are going to have to, I guess, duke it out to figure out who closes or who goes forward. Or how that is going to work, because there are certainly some within, in my opinion, that are too close in proximity to each other."

This map of Victoria shows the number of dispensaries, the green dots.

Yellow markers are schools and community centres.

If the green and yellow are not separated by at least 200 metres, the store moves or closes.

But Alex Robb from Trees says it's time to regulate.

"It's going to be a process. And the city is going to have to do it either now or do it in a year or year and a half from now when the Liberals come up with their plan and put it forward."

Victoria's mayor says with so many dispensaries opening, the city has to regulate.

"We have to do something because we can't do nothing."

BC's Attorney General Suzanne Anton says she understands what cities are struggling with.

"We are in a bit of a limbo because the federal government has said that it's making changes. But it hasn't made them yet. It hasn't indicated what the changes are. So, there is no question the municipalities are struggling to deal with that."

While the wrangling over regulations goes on, the industry continues its expansion planning, with or without politicians.

Are the regulators not bright enough to realize that if all the dispensaries are close together it will be easier for the police to keep an eye out for underage kids hanging about. They get their tax dollars, what does it matter?

if you'd ever lived victoria i think you might see that differently.

for a city with only 350K residents, the traffic is terrible as it is. If people all had to go to the same neighbourhood to buy buds it would be crazy 24/7 - with a massive lack of parking as it is, the tow trucks and police necessary to respond to all the complaints that would roll in would make things even worse

I've been to Victoria. There are two arguments regarding locale. Bunched together could result in a price war or spread them out to serve every neighborhood.
