The effort to legalize marijuana in the First State continued Thursday in Dover, with Cannabis Bureau of Delaware's citizen's lobby day.

Members of the bureau, along with dozens of supportive citizens, flooded Legislative Hall the morning of January 19, 2017, with one goal in mind: acquire a sponsor for legislation that would tax and regulate the recreational use of marijuana.

Cannabis Bureau of Delaware Co-Chair John Sybert said legalization is in Delaware's best interest.

"Right now, we have a budget shortfall, and we've seen with other states that we can make that money up with legal cannabis," Sybert said. "Sixty one percent of Delawareans believe it should be legal, and we're fighting for that, for them."

If the Cannabis Bureau is successful in getting a sponsor, they'll face another challenge in Governor John Carney, who has made it clear he intends to veto any legislation that would legalize marijuana.

"By the time it gets to his desk, we will have so much public support for this that he'll have to change his mind on it," said Sybert.
