Erin Ryan knows what it's like going viral on the internet. "This thing is blowing up," she said Monday. This "thing" was a large pile of marijuana apparently deliberately dumped Saturday in the parking lot at WinCo Foods in Redding.
Ryan, who posted on Facebook a photo of the big pile of pot being protected by a WinCo Foods security guard, had seen her photo shared 6,580 time by late Monday morning.
"It's (marijuana) the free cheese of Facebook," Ryan said. "Free cheese always draws a line" of people.
Ryan, a representative for North State congressman Doug LaMalfa, said she and her husband, Bill, had parked their car in a remote area of the grocery store's parking lot early Saturday evening and were walking to do a little shopping.
That's when they spotted the security guard keeping an eye over what appeared to them to be a pile of manure.
"Hey buddy, have you seen my elephant?" Ryan's husband quipped to the guard as they were passing by, she said.
That's when they learned it wasn't a pile of manure, she said.
"I couldn't believe it," she said. "We had thought somebody had shoveled out their horse trailer."
Ryan said the security guard, who was unsure what to do with the pot he found as he awaited for the police to arrive, later swept it into a large trash bag.
"Odd things happen in Redding," Ryan said. "Obviously, it was done on purpose. It didn't fall out" of a car.
Redding Police Sgt. Les James said police picked up and destroyed the marijuana.
James, who saw a photo of the marijuana pile, said it appeared to him to be marijuana trimmings, also known as "shake."
Although one could have possibly used the trimmings to make concentrated cannabis, it most likely did not have any value.
"If it was of any value, they (the owner) wouldn't have thrown it away," he said.
A telephone call to the Redding grocery store was referred to its corporate office in Boise, Idaho, but a spokesperson for the office had not returned the call as of Monday afternoon.
