The marijuana industry in Chiloquin is gaining momentum as an increasing number of businesses plan to locate within the city.
Since the start of the year, at least three businesses have either committed to, or are exploring, the possibility of moving into town, including two dispensaries and one processor.
Mayor Mark Cobb, himself a medical marijuana grower and industry consultant, said he looks forward to welcoming these businesses. He said growth in this sector and others, including public infrastructure, is leading Chiloquin on a path to greater economic strength.
"It's the most action I've seen in Chiloquin since I've been here," he said.
Businesses looking to set up shop include Crater Lake Connections, a dispensary owned by Christopher Monroe and located at 131 S. First Ave. Monroe's license to sell marijuana is still being processed by the state and he is renovating his storefront in anticipation of the application's approval.
Moving in up the road at the corner of West Chocktoot Street and South Second Avenue is Exact Extracts, a processor owned by Jack Albers. Albers also has a pending application with the state and has been established in Klamath Falls since 2016.
A second prospective dispensary could be built by Ed Medina, owner of A Better Way Medicinal Alternatives in Klamath Falls. Medina informed the Chiloquin City Council Tuesday of his intent to invest in the city's marijuana industry and Cobb said Medina has begun looking for potential locations.
Cobb said Medina became well-established with his medical marijuana dispensary in Klamath Falls and said he would welcome Medina and other prospective business owners to Chiloquin.
With an increasing number of marijuana developers looking toward Chiloquin, other businesses expect growth in their sales as well. Don Cheatham, owner of Cascade Garden Supply on Highway 97, does not sell marijuana products, but carries supplies specific to the industry and said he expects "a giant influx of people" into the area.
"We anticipate the green movement really taking ahold of Chiloquin," he said.
