The public is invited to learn about and comment on an update to the city's regulations for cannabis-related businesses at a community meeting at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 13 in the council chamber at City Hall, 10890 San Pablo Ave.

"This community meeting will provide an opportunity for interested parties to share input about what regulations are appropriate for El Cerrito," the city said in an announcement. "After the meeting, staff will develop a draft ordinance based on the City Council's direction, public input and best practices."

The council is expected to hold a study session on the draft ordinance in October.

California voters approved Proposition 64, legalizing the recreational use of cannabis (marijuana) by adults over 21 years of age at the state level, in November 2016.

Cannabis-related businesses require permits from both the state and local jurisdiction where they operate. The El Cerrito council in April voted to start the process to develop local regulations for such enterprises.

Cannabis use, possession, and sales remain illegal under federal law.

Community members who are not able to attend the meeting, may mail comments to El Cerrito Community Development Dept., Attn: Sean Moss, 10890 San Pablo Avenue, El Cerrito, CA 94530.
