Aurora Cannabis' first shipment of Alberta-grown medical marijuana has been shipped to Germany to help offset "a significant shortage of supply" in the European powerhouse, the company announced Tuesday.

The company shipped 50 kilograms of dried cannabis flower from its central Alberta facility in Mountain View County to Germany's leading medical cannabis distributor, Berlin-based Pedanios, after receiving an export permit from Health Canada as well as provisional import status from the German Federal Narcotics Bureau.

Pedanios will distribute the cannabis through a network of more than 1,500 pharmacies across Germany, the company said, but Aurora also hopes to become a top producer and supplier of medical cannabis in other European Union markets.

"This represents a huge milestone for Aurora and Pedanios, and a critical step in our aggressive international expansion strategy," Aurora chief global business development officer Neil Belot said in a Tuesday news release.

"This is the first step in unlocking future potential markets in the EU of several hundred million people, and strongly validates Aurora's acquisition of Pedanios as one of the most significant strategic transactions to date in the cannabis industry."

The company is building what it's described as the world's largest legal marijuana production facility near Edmonton International Airport and started trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange in July.
