In April, Gov. Jim Justice signed Senate Bill 386, legalizing cannabis for medical use within the state.

With the new industry poised to make an impact, the West Virginia Medical Cannabis Society (WVMCS) will hold the inaugural West Virginia Medical Cannabis Seminar Sept. 30 at Morgantown Marriott at Waterfront Place, with many industry professionals scheduled to attend.

The seminar will run from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.

"The main thing is, medical cannabis will change the state in ways we cannot even imagine. It will increase jobs, tax revenue and quality of life for patients in West Virginia," said Michael Patterson, CEO of US Cannabis Pharmaceutical Research and Development, who will lead the seminar. Patterson predicts that the industry will provide an enormous economic boost to the state.

"How it works, is there will be a 10 percent wholesale tax on the dispensaries from the growers," Patterson said. Between tax revenue and enforcement savings, it is estimated that there will be a $62 million annual lift to the state budget. In addition, it is an industry which will provide well for the job market.

The forces behind the upcoming seminar hope to introduce those interested in the medical cannabis industry to the job opportunities available and the knowledge needed to succeed.

The seminar will also touch on the benefits of medical cannabis in health circles and the fight against the opioid epidemic that West Virginia currently is facing.

"It's a medicine that's never caused a recorded death in human history," Patterson said. "It'll decrease overdose deaths and addiction. People need to be educated."
