A 45-year-old man and 24-year-old woman are facing charges including possession of the proceeds of crime and drug possession for the purpose of trafficking following an Ottawa Police Service drug unit raid of a marijuana dispensary on Armstrong Street, near Parkdale Avenue, on Friday.

Ottawa police have staged another raid on an illegal marijuana dispensary, charging two people at the CannaGreen on Armstrong Street across from the Parkdale Market with drug trafficking.

"We continue to stress that there is no 'grey area' when it comes to storefront marijuana dispensaries," said a statement from Staff Sgt. Rick Carey. "They are and will continue to be illegal operations."

The raid conducted Friday appears to be part of a renewed effort by police to close down the city's illegal pot shops. On Oct. 3 police raided Cannabis Culture on Bank Street, Dr. Greenthumb on Montreal Road and several outdoor grow-ops, arresting eight people. Both shops re-opened.

The CannaGreen opened in September. It's been robbed twice by thieves who broke into the antique store next door, then bashed a hole through the inside wall to get into the dispensary.

During Friday's raid, police said they arrested a 45-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman, charging them with various offences, including possession for the purpose of trafficking and possessing the proceeds of crime.

Police said they seized dried marijuana, concentrate (shatter), cannabis-infused edibles and cash.

CannaGreen is apparently affiliated with a B.C.-based outfit that has opened multiple stores in Ottawa under various names. Staff at the store have refused to speak to the Citizen or reveal the names of the managers or owners.

Another CannaGreen on McEwen Avenue in the west end closed in late summer after neighbors and the alderman for the ward complained about it. That shop was robbed three times over the summer. Coun. Mark Taylor called on the police chief to close the dispensary, saying it was operating illegally and had become "a magnet for additional criminal activity."

Management cleared out the west-end store but the CannaGreen on Armstrong Street opened a few days later.

There are about 20 dispensaries in Ottawa.

The federal government has promised to legalize recreational marijuana in July 2018.

It's up to the provinces to decide how marijuana will be distributed and sold. Ontario plans to sell pot through the LCBO, in standalone stores and online.

Last month Ontario Attorney General Yasir Naqvi warned that illegal dispensaries will be shut down.
