At a Special Town Meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 24, Newbury voters rejected a temporary moratorium through 2018 on recreational marijuana cultivation and retail businesses.

The moratorium was proposed to give town officials time to work on legal, planning, and public safety issues.

Voters did approve a bylaw that restricts marijuana consumption in any public area owned or under the control of the town or in any place accessible to the public. The penalty for public use was set at a $300 fine for each offense.
