On Monday, Nov. 27, the Buena Vista Township Board of Trustees will consider a recommendation from the planning commission to allow medical marijuana facilities to operate in the township.

The commission, which will be tasked with creating the ordinances for the facilities, wanted to see if there is support from the board before moving forward with the recommendation, according to Chairman George Drain.

"The board wanted input from the community and to gather more information," Drain said.

The township held a forum on Nov. 16, which was organized to gather input from community members about whether board members should allow those facilities to set up shop within the township's boundaries.

"I think that they heard there that it sounded pretty much positive, that we should move forward," he said.

Michigan recently passed the Medical Marihuana Facilities Licensing Act, which gives local governments the power to help determine which businesses can take part in the medical marijuana industry and what ordinances and permits to approve for those businesses.

The ordinances and permits that the township can approve will pertain to growers, processors, provisioning centers, secure transporters and safety compliance for facilities.

Across the region, Bay County's Bangor and Pinconning townships have opted in and have already started luring millions of dollars worth of investments tied to the medical marijuana industry

The next planning commission meeting will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7, at the township's hall, 1160 S. Outer Drive.
