WA: 4 Facts About Cannabis That Might Surprise You

What's one of the most common misconceptions about Washington's legal cannabis industry? That it's all about 20-somethings looking for a recreational buzz.

In fact, the bulk of the clients at Everett's Purple Haze are 35 to 40 and older, and come from all backgrounds and professions, says Angela Johnson, manager of the inviting, award-winning recreational cannabis shop — a favorite in the Daily Herald's Readers' Choice Awards.

What else might surprise those new to the shop or cannabis in general?

It's not all about the high: One of the biggest areas of growth has nothing to do with smoking cannabis or getting high. Lotions and tinctures infused with CBD, CBG or CBN — some of the numerous active cannabinoids identified in cannabis — are hugely popular. Clients who use no other cannabis product will pick them up to help relax particular areas of the body after a long hike or gym workout, for example, Johnson says. "We find it hard to keep our most popular lotions on the shelves!"

There are options other than smoking: Edible cannabis products are another area of growing interest, especially among those who prefer not to smoke. However, because people are still learning about these options, Johnson encourages clients to discuss the various selections with staff.

It's not only about relaxing: There are numerous cannabis strains available and each has its unique properties, Johnson says. For example, Sativa strains typically have an uplifting effect compared to Indica strains most often used for sleep and relaxation. Various hybrids of the two have their own qualities and that's where knowledgeable, well-trained staff can help clients pick the variety that will provide the effect they want.

Some clients are trying cannabis for the first time: Not everyone who visits Purple Haze is experienced with cannabis — with more awareness of its different properties and uses, many clients Angela sees are new to the experience. "Let staff know — we always take the time to help you not only with selecting the right product and variety, but also how much to try at first so you have a positive experience," she says.
