Zo's Cage Of Green - ZCOG Hydro Grow 2.0 - AK48 - Nirvana Seeds

Alright Guys Here We Are beginning my Second grow and this grow should be much better than my first grow, now that i have the learning curve and first grow mistakes out of the way for the most part its time to grow some medical grade cannabis. This grow will be a bigger and better version of Zo's Cage of Green which is the training method i used in my first grow to get optimal light penetration and even spacing to all parts of my plant. Follow along with this grow to learn more.

Okay so if you haven't read my last grow journal feel free to do so here. Zo's First Grow 5x5 - AK48 - Northern Lights - Aurora Indica - Nirvana Seeds - 2016 - Page 3 (post 43 is where i began discussing Zo's Cage of Green)

What is Zo's Cage of Green?
On my last grow, I trained one of my plants (AK48) into a first of its kind training method that involves low stress training combined with high stress training providing each Branch on the plant its own "section" of what i call "Zo's Cage of green" , if you google "Cage of Green" "SOG" or any terms similar you won't see any plants trained this way even though they may call it cage of green it usually involves a vertical scrog grow using wire cage. The only materials needed to replicate my method are Velcro plant ties and bamboo garden stakes , both preferably GREEN, you dont want a "Cage of Green" with orange plant ties and yellow stakes , keep your garden GREEN
You will also need Smart pots fabric pots (any size) for the velcro plant ties but im sure if you are using regular nursery pots you can find a way to make it work.

Ak-48 - Welcome to Zo's "Cage of Green"

Based on instructions from the book three a light, by day 30 of flower you should have your plants caged so they can support the extra weight of heavy buds without falling over. This is what the "Three A light" Cage looks like compared to my original cage.

Also note the books recommendation was to cage shortly after the 2nd defoliation , which is around day 18-22 , but mandatory to have them caged by day 30. My plant was caged on day 31

before cage ( day 28 )

after cage ( day 31 )

I actually waited late to do this which could've caused me to not like my cage once complete, it literally felt like i just pushed all of the buds to the center of the cage and the top colas were the only buds going to produce heavy nugs, while everything under the top of the plant would suffer, this is when the light bulb in my head went off and by day 32 i had envisioned and created "Zo's Cage of Green" or ZCOG.

Each Branch Gets its own section of the "Cage of green" , My Cage Has 8 total sections , 7 horizontal Branches tied down using velcro plant ties, When the plant starts packing on the weight and the velcro is no longer holding them down due to the weight making the branches fall, we reverse the velcro plant ties use and the branches will then get tied up to the bamboo stake to hold them up and support the heavy flowers.

Bamboo Gardening stakes serve two functions in ZCOG; they are used as support in the late weeks of flower and used to create a Equal cage of green, simply place the stake in the medium ( as far away from the main root as possible. You can then VERY GENTLY place your velcro plant tie around the desired branch and train it to the section you want, Be VERY CAREFUL not to break one of your branches

The 8th section is what i consider "Inside the cage" this should be your highest colas on your tree, around week 5-6 your heaviest buds will start to need support, Use A Velcro plant tie to connect the 2 branches like such, You can do this for any branches you want "Inside the cage" or that need support, just find the matching shoot/branch and Velcro to Victory!

On my next update i will answer the usual questions pertaining to a grow journal. Stay Tuned.

Update - So now that my first grow is in the final stage of drying/curing i will kick this new grow into over drive.
So here is the quick overview.

What strain is it? 1 plant Ak48 / 1 plant Aurora Indica / 2 plants Northern Lights - Nirvana Seeds
Is it Indica, Sativa or Hybrid? What percentages? ak48 - hybrid/sativa / Aurora - indica / northern lights - hybrid/indica
Is it in Veg or Flower stage? Veg
If in Veg... For how long? I Plan on vegging 6-7 weeks (Ak48 had a head start)
If in Flower stage... For how long?
Indoor or outdoor? Indoor
Soil or Hydro? Hydo - 1.5 rockwool ---> 6x6 rockwool
What size pot/medium ? 1.5X1.5 rockwool cube ---> 6x6 Rockwool cube ---> sits in 8" planter bucket
Size of light? 2 4ft 8 Bulb T5 Lights = 432 watts in veg , 864 watts in flower.
Is it aircooled? No
Temp of Room/cab? 79-81 f during day / 68-70f at night
RH of Room/cab? 50
PH of media or res? unknown. 5.5
Any Pests ? no
How often are you watering? Water as needed, no set schedule. I have learned the plants tell you when they are hungry.

This girl has been Hiding out in the tent since the end of july so it is well ahead of the rest of the plants which is fine with me, i have heard that if you let Ak 48 veg for a longer period it will be a greater plant int the long run.

My transplanting method has changed a little, (well a lot lol)

Once the seedling has used all of the stored nutrients from the seedling phase and starts yellowing on the lower leaves its time for the first feeding and transplant.

IMG_20160821_135645.jpg

dip the 6x6 cube and flip it several times to ensure the entire cube is evenly saturated; once this is done, poke 5 holes in the 6x6 hugo cube to ensure the cube drains efficiently and remove the cube from the water and squeeze and release 75% of the water.
IMG_20160821_142010.jpg

I now get a couple tablespoons of the feed water and mix in Xtreme gardening azos until the mix has the consistency of runny pancake mix, you don't want it to choke your roots.
IMG_20160821_135758.jpg
IMG_20160821_140008.jpg

You will now want to pour some Mykos inside your 6x6 cube and a little to the side. Dip the cube in the Azos mixture followed by a mykos dip, then plug the 1.5 cube into the 6x6 cube.

Hope all is well in your world.

Is this grow still alive?

We would love to be updated with some pictures and info.

How about posting a 420 Strain Review?

If you need any help with posting photos, please read our Photo Gallery Tutorial.

I am moving this to Abandoned Journals until we get updates.

Sending you lots of love and positive energy.

So 2 days ago i finally up potted the Ak48 plant. I didnt really up pot, the 6x6 hugo cube was already sitting in a empty 8" planter pot. I presoaked the grodan mini cubes in the same nutrient solution im currently feeding and phd to 5.5 , i then filled the planter pot 1/2 way full and sprinkled some xtreme gardening azos & mykos directly to the roots as well as the grodan mini cubes (much like the photo above) I then sat the hugo cube right on top. In 1-2 weeks when the hugo cube has rooted fully in the mini cubes i will fill in the rest of the 8" pot and let the roots go another 2 weeks before transplanting to the final 5 gallon container. The goal is to have a very dense and strong root system going into flower.

This is what my plant looked like on my first grow when i transplanted from the 1.5 to 4x4 cube and from 4x4 to mini cubes vs this grow.

This is what my plant looked like this grow before/after being transplanted from a 1.5 cube to 6x6 grodan hugo cube to 1/2 filled 8" pot of grodan mini cubes. The difference is like night and day. I think its safe to say the plant is thriving and thanks me for my new transplant method

And here is the structure of the same plant. Both photos taken right before i up potted
IMG_20161028_230048.jpg

In 2 to 3 weeks the root system should look somewhat like the photo below. This is a photo of my root system on my first grow but you will see it wasnt the most effective use of my space. You will notice only 1/2 of the mini cubes have roots in them. The difference in this grow is the fully rooted 6x6 hugo cube sits on top of the mini cubes instead of being planted in them, helping me make the most of my media

Update -the Ak48 seems to be loving the new space and is thriving. Fed for the first time since up potting. 3 new girls have been added to the tent. 1 Aurora indica and 2 northern lights. One of the northern lights seems to be well behind the second and is showing deficiencies.

Just stopped in to check things out and love what you have going on in here!

I'm very interested in watching how the hydro goes. I want to try out hydro eventually myself but feel I need to just get some soil grows under my belt first.

Anyways... I'm subbed and can't wait to see what's next for your girls!

Thanks for stopping by the show. I've learned so many new things from my first grow to this second grow. Ironically i planned to do my first grow in soil and when i brought a bag of fox farms ocean forest soil home from the hydro shop it had fungus nats in it so i decided to go a different route to avoid that issue. After i i feel i have mastered hydro i plan to move to a super soil / no-till organic set up. I actually am considering this whole grow more of an experiment to learn what training style and set up works best for me as well as mixing light spectrums so this will be a interesting journey. I'm currently waiting on a new seed order to arrive, should be here any day which will add much more variety to my garden, I'm anxious to pop one of the new beans.

Such a kickass method of growing, I love that plant's look it is great. Keep it up man would like to see that prepetual

Thanks pat, glad you could swing in and watch this journey. I may cull the Northern lights that is currently underperforming and plant a new seed and get the perpetual journey started.

Ok guys, i posted this in the lighting forum but decided this was a question that deserved to be posted in this journal since i will be testing this in this journal and hopefully have it down by my next grow; I need help with figuring out my light spectrum for veg/bloom with my current light setup to make sure i am not doing more harm than good by mixing the led spectrum and T5. The plan is to keep the plants short and Run 4 Mars hydro Reflector 96 units (rectangular) around the 4 sides of the 8 Bulb T5 (rectangular) keeping all 5 lights 24" away in Veg and 12" above the canopy in bloom. The Light footprint of the T5 is 4x2 while each of the Mars reflector 96 units has a footprint of 3x2 in bloom. The actual wattage of the T5 = 8 54W bulbs = 432 Watts.
I'm not sure on the actual draw on the Mars lights, The website specifications says "Draw power:120V:207W±5%, 240V: 203W±5%" however on the back of the light when i received it reads "Power consumption: 190W±5%" so i'll go with each Mars Hydro pulls 190W --> 190 x4 = 760 . 432 + 760 = 1192 Watts. At 25 Square Feet thats 47.68 Watts/ sq ft. Recommended Wattage is 40-50 watts/sq ft for optimal results is what i have gathered from research but please correct me if im wrong. see photos below .
IMG_20161027_143712.jpg

IMG_20161026_020159.jpg

This diagram is as close as i could scale the layout according to manufacture specs and the correct dimensions of the light footprints of each fixture , the tent is 5"x5"
the t5 is 4"x2" each mars reflector 96 is measured at 2"x 0.9" ( the reflectors measure 23"x10" in real measurement) the T5 light footprint in diagram covers a 4.1" x 2.1" but i understand anything not directly under the light will suffer (the light blue area at the ends of each t5). Each Mars in the diagram has a footprint of exactly 3" x 2". If anyone has experience mixing light spectrums for veg/flower what worked best for you?

Great to hear your first grow taught you a lot! And that sucks about the soil but IMO everything happens for a reason. Anyway, what strains do you have coming? And which do you plan to pop?

I think you might have read my mind, all 3 of those were in the top 5 i was going to pick from. Great minds think alike.

Update - 11/03

Everything is looking good this way.. I'm trying out a few different new training methods to see what works best for me and my set up. On the next update i will explain the different methods I have been using to shape my plants. Veg time isn't a concern for me as much this go round so i don't mind the extra veg time required to heal and strengthen my plants before flipping to flower.

Update - 11/05
Ok Guys last time you saw the ak48 plant it looked like this
IMG_20161030_215720.jpg
IMG_20161028_230048.jpg
The structure of the plant looks like a modified main- line, The highest branches are trained laterally while the lower branches grow vertically until they have reached the canopy, where as in a traditional mainline you are working off of 2 main branches, i have about 9 branches i am working with on this plant.
after a few days the branches will reach toward the light and stretch, like so..
IMG_20161102_2009491.jpg

And now we do another extreme defoliation.
all growth is trimmed except the new growth of a top, you will notice this is what the plant looked like on 10/21 after its second extreme defoliation. The 2 top branches and the 2 branches below both were FIM'd to allow the lower branches to catch up
IMG_20161026_022011.jpg

12 days later it looked like this.
IMG_20161103_185306.jpg

Again, all growth is trimmed off except the new growth of a top, you will notice i now have nearly double the tops i had 2 weeks ago and i have added velcro plant ties to keep the shoots on the top branches even with the rest of the plant, looks like its working well.

20161104_131928.jpg
20161104_131325.jpg

As for the other 3 plants, they received there first training session and defoliation as well

before.
IMG_20161102_200555.jpg

(White arrows represent where a new shoot/branch will grow)

plant 1 - Aurora Indica - I trimmed this plant down to 4 branches total and trimmed all growth below these top 4 branches. Once the plant has recovered, each branch will get topped. This will create 8 main colas on this plant.
20161104_124912.jpg

plant 2 - Northern lights p2 - This plant went through the most extreme defoliation of all 3 plants, why? because its growing so fast , I started it a week and a half after the AI, and it already outgrew the other 2 smaller plants in the garden. Literally everything except the top 4 branches have been removed, even fan leafs. the bottom 2 nodes were trimmed to everything but the new growth tips, while the 2 higher branches were both topped. this will create 6 main growth shoots. depending on how the plant grows i may top all 4 new branches once they have grown out., If i do this, this will create 10 main shoots.
20161104_102307.jpg

plant 3 - Northern Lights p3 - This plant was trimmed down to 3 main branches and i havent really decided how many times i will top the branches, i could go 6 or 12. My plan is if the Northern lights pheno 2 refoliates and recovers quicker than this pheno which i damaged less through defoliation, i will have to get rid of this pheno and pop a new seed.
20161104_125115.jpg

After. Don't be alarmed, the new growth is coming soon:Namaste::cheer:
