Grandpa Tokin Grows GG4 & ASD In RDWC With Cree LED

Hello everyone! This is Grandpa’s grow journal where I plan to share my latest medical grow. I only grow for myself so I keep it small and as simple as I can. I only flower two plants at a time and that keeps me happy. Here’s the information to start.

1. Strains: GG4 and Amherst Sour Diesel (both from clone)
2. Medium: DWC
3. Nutrients: Blue Planet Nutrients (BPN), Cal/Mag, Hydroguard, Big Bud, Carboload, Mammoth P
4. Reverse Osmosis filtration system (5 filtered) well water. Beginning well water is PH 7.4 at 170 PPM. After filtration, water is PH 7.5 at 0 PPM.
5. Lighting: Timber LED Lights (500w Cree total)

I normally veg in separate 5 Gallon DWC buckets under T5 LED lights and they like it a lot:

I’ve been working hard on a DIY Recirculating DWC system for a few weeks while I was cleaning out the flower room.

Here’s what I love about DWC...those ROOTS!

Today I put them in the room, but they will veg for a few more days and harden to the LEDs. I intend to update this journal almost daily. We’ll see how that goes...Enjoy!

I also like to squeeze my own rosin, so there’s a distinct possibility of seeing those pictures as well...peace!

So hey, pull up your chair and sit a spell. I won’t bite!

They are loving the LEDs! I normally let everything settle for a few days before flipping to 12/12, but they are looking like they are ready to rock. Thus, today is day 1 of flower! Woohoo! I love it when a plan comes together! Really looking forward to seeing flowers again.

As I thought, the res took 2 gallons to fill and I’ll be changing up Nutrients slightly in the next few days to build up to my normal flower regime. Here’s what I do (things vary, but I try to keep to this as much as possible. Umm, it works).

(*All measurements are per Gallon of RO Water/I use BPN Nutrients but this could be substituted with most 3 part)

Veg:
PH 5.5-5.8; PPM ~400
4ml Cal-Mag
3ml BPN Micro
3ml BPN Grow
3ml BPN Bloom
2ml Hydroguard

Flower weeks 1-2:
PH 5.5-5.8; PPM ~550
4ml Cal-Mag
4ml BPN Micro
4ml BPN Grow
4ml BPN Bloom
2ml Hydroguard

Flower weeks 3-8:
PH 5.5-5.8; PPM ~750+
4ml Cal-Mag
4ml BPN Micro
8ml BPN Bloom
4ml BPN Liquid Blue (Bloom booster)
3ml carbs/sugar (Carboload, Big Bud, Bud Candy, etc.)
2ml Hydroguard

*At week 5 Cal-mag is removed and replaced with MgSO4 (Magnesium sulfate, commonly known as Epsom salt)

We’ll see how it goes, but this works for me. Barring no unforeseen crap happening, all is good-to-hook at this point. Here’s what they look like this morning. Enjoy!

Looks like a great spot to hang out. You and I have very very similar setups. I'm looking forward to this grow.

On a side note, I have 4 Strawberry Kush F5's on the go right now and like you I just flipped to flower this morning. We'll be harvesting together. lol.

Thanks Scrogdawg! Yours are looking marvelous my friend. You’re definitely right, we’ll be harvesting around the same time. Your Scrog net looks a lot more full than mine. I need bud! Thanks for stopping by.

I followed Scrogdawg in like a bad smell. I'll sit quietly and watch if that's alright? Promise I won't touch myself to the root porn.. maybe..

Ha! You’re sick! I think I love you...

Hi gang! Today’s update is pretty easy. Normally, the first thing I do, when I open the door first thing in the morning, is check my reservoir level. As you can see she’s down about 1-1.5 gallons overnight. I’ll wait to top her off until later this afternoon. PH, Temp, and EC/PPM all look perfect so right now, not much work for the old guy. That puts a smile on my lips. Enjoy and have a wonderful day!

Since I’m not allowed to call her Gorilla, I’ve decided that all further references to this plant shall forever be known as:
GRANDPA GLUE! That is all...

Theres no shortage of O2 in your reservoir. How do you like the General Hydroponics air pump? How have you split the 4 lines?
I use the same pump and run one stone in each of the 4 pods. I've never had one in the reservoir.

Is the taller one the Grandpa Glue or the Sour Diesel?

I actually like that pump. It’s efficient and fairly quiet. I put one air stone in each bucket and one in the res. It’s probably overkill, but I like the way it helps keep things mixed. I have an OCD aversion to standing liquid...LOL. I’m still a fan of mucho dissolved O2 in DWC. Yeah, the taller one is the GG. She’s a very healthy cut and I’ve managed to keep her for several years. Thanks for looking in bud.

The biggest non similarity that we have is the chiller. I don't have one and about the highest I've seen in my res is about 75 F. I've always used Z7 in my hydro and have never had a root issue. My normal temps are 66 F to 71 F.

Is yours needed or more precautionary? What temp do you run at?

I just set up my cob rail! How do you like yours? How are the temps? Mine feel kind of warm to the touch. Hotter than my blurples for sure.

Hey Grandpa just found your journal!

Your ladies are looking great! Sorry about Tunkers and Scrogdawg dragging dirt into your grow room .

Love your set up and I'm actually really curious to see what your lights will do! It looks like you have a solid grip on things so I'll just sit here and soak up the info if that's Ok!

Can't wait to see your marvelous budding ladies ;P

Sup GT! I'll just call you grandpa if that's okay. Eyes4grandpa is gramps already otherwise I would call you that. However, I digress. I'm interested in doing hydro soon so I'll be here taking notes :blunt:

I should've stated this upfront (I have an excuse...I'm old) this is my very first time running a recirculating system and the chiller. It's also the first time I'll flower using only LEDs. I've been using a 600w and 400w hps for years. I did supplement with LEDs a few times, but never have I flowered solely with these Timbers. It will be epic! LOL

So, to answer your questions, I normally just run stand alone DWC buckets and my temps are very similar to yours. I've never had any root issues either. My thought was that the pump was going to add a bunch of heat. Hindsight tells me I could most likely get by without the chiller, but it was precautionary.

I set the chiller at 65*F and it's keeping my solution between 65-67*F. I don't think it's working real hard to keep it there since my buckets and res are sitting on the concrete. I've only heard it kick on once while I was in the room. If your temps are staying in the range you stated then I wouldn't waste the money on a chiller. Just my opinion. Not having the chiller was one reason I am a huge fan of Hydroguard. I may not need that anymore, but it does work on keeping roots nice and white as long as you don't run a completely sterile res with H2O2 or pool shock chemicals. Since I now have the chiller I'll continue to use it and see if it makes a difference.

Thanks for the questions brother! I appreciate that.

Fantastic work! I'm liking these so far. Mine are warm too, but nothing compared to my old hps. Thanks for looking bud.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to seeing some buds again. I haven't flowered since early June. Hopefully I didn't forget how...

Your garden looks great. Tunkers and Scrogdawg must have a good reputation around here. They're probably derelicts who smoke pot. :circle-of-love:

S’up Yo! When you’re ready to give it a shot just let me know. I’ll help in any way I can. The first time I experimented with DWC I completely gave up soil before my first one was finished flowering. I find it easier to manage and much cleaner. Naturally, that’s probably because my grow is small. Thanks for stopping in my friend.
