MadHatterJack's Indoor Soil & Soilless Grow Journal 2017

Hey Guys,

MadHatterJack here and I have finally decided to share my mad scientist grow in time for halloween and create a grow journal. :high-five:

Info
Strain:Durban Kush non-feminized (Apricot Kush x Durban Poison) from Ancestral Seeds
Indica Dominant, unknown percentage.
3 Weeks in Veg
Two in soil, two in promix
Mixed with Mycorrhizae
3 Gallon Fabric Pots
450W Meizhi LED (185W actual)
18/6 Light Cycle
21C when lights off, 26-27 when on
55-60% RH, using humidifier
PH at 6.5 for soil and 5.5-6.2 for soilless
Water every 3 days
First feeding at 630 PPM of maxigrow

I loves electronics and have made that my career. Looking at how low electricity LEDs used I figured it was really safe and cost effective. I also have experience as a landscaper and have always liked growing plants. This however will be my first successful grow. I tried when I was much younger and failed as I did zero research.

With the idea that growing up to four plants in Spring of 2018 will be legal it made me really excited. So I jumped the gun and got a grow tent and a cheap LED.

I then decided to draw up a plan but first I had to get high.

I decided I would wait to get a carbon filter/fan and go get some good genetics. I went down to a local seed bank and bought 11 seeds for $60 of Durban Kush. I'm a huge fan of the strain GSC, so this is very close.

I germinated 6 seeds right in peat pellets and in 4-5 days they sprouted giving me 4 in total. Five actually germinated but the last one didn't make it so I threw it out.

Here you can see that I have one in the middle in light as the others sit in the left corner in darkness.

First one

Then two

Then four sprouted

I waited until I saw roots then moved them into these small containers for the time being.

I needed to do something about the humidity so I added a bucket with towels.

Added a vent for an intake.

I picked up a humidifier to replace the bucket of water.

I then picked up some cool LED grow glasses as the lights were getting to me.

Later I decided to pick up the rest of my equipment.

The ducting goes right up to a window fan I have had in there for years so shouldn't cause suspect.
IMG_20171024_171805.jpg

I then transplanted into 3 gallon fabric pots. I didn't have enough starter mix so I made the mistake of getting promix with 9 months fertilizer. So that's going to be interesting in flower for two of the plants.

They grew- 2.5 weeks

I then ran into some issues and had to spray them with neem oil with some help from some members on the forum.

I added a HD USB camera to my tent and then FIM'ed and did some LST with pipe cleaners and that's where we are at today. :thanks:

Aww yea man, you know I'm in! Set up looks prime mate, and the plants are coming along beautifully!

Glad you made it Mad Hatter!

Hey Jack
I just stumbled upon your journal and like what I’m seeing. So I’m subb’d and looking forward to checking in from time to time. I’m only just starting my Indoor GrowNumber3 - in Coco, LED’s, using 5 gallon Grow Bags, AN nutes and a whole lot to learn still! Respect from Australia

Thanks, I'll try to post some update photos as I'm doing some watering and lst tonight. I checked out and subbed your grow journal. Looks nice.

Update Oct 25

I got home from work and humidity is like such. Not bad.

Watering time, this feed is essentially my plain water feed but I add a few things.

IMG_20171025_173549.jpg

I mixed it up and made a mixture for my soil and soilless plants.

IMG_20171025_173638.jpg

Phed and measured ppms to around 200+

I then did some LST and sad to say I still see thrip damage. Need to do a spray on all 4 at one time. My first application was light on the neem as I wanted to see how they did. Being that I needed to fim I didn't do them at one time. I also saw a weird stripe on one of my plants but they still look be to doing well.

And here again.

Any idea what the stripe is?

Don't know what stripe your looking at so id say all is well! They look good .

Update today. I am dealing with Russet mites I think so have been thinking about getting some diatomaceous earth to go with the neem treatment. I cleaned out everything and sprayed down the walls and hit the plants with a double dose (1 tsp per liter of neem and 1 tsp of dish soap) from last time. Going to hit them again on Sunday with a triple dose (1.5 tsp) and cover with diatomaceous earth.

Here I took off the pipe cleaners I was using for lst as I didn't want to damage the leaves when I sprayed.

Sorry to hear about the mites-good to see your on it though!

Other than that they do look great!

Feeding time. Cal mag, root stimulant, maxi grow, and some nutes for aroma.

I ordered a one handed mister and tomorrow I'm going to hit the plants hard with neem. I'm going to take my plants and my led out and put my heater in there and try to get the temperature up to 40 degrees celsius or I think 105f for any American readers. I don't think I want to do this with my plants in the tent but I figured this would be a good tactic to kill anything living in there still after the wipe and spray down on Thursday. I figure they'll likely leave the plants from the aggressive neem applications over the past few days and be on the walls of the tent. Leave it like that for few hours.

Today I hit with a high dose of neem. New spray bottle came which provides more pressure and even misting. It's also nice to have the ability to mist on angles.

I then took out my plants and light and put my ceramic space heater in there.
420-magazine-mobile1503563541.jpg

Things got toasty. This should kill anything living in there. Leave it like that for a few hours.

Cheers

Hoping for the best mate! .

Today I put a top dressing of Hydroton down to help with watering and to keep the leaves out of the dirt. It also looks dam sexy.

I find the pro mix takes awhile for the water to drain into the medium so this helps a lot.

Agreed, looks sexy af

Nice ! . .

Does this look like nutrient burn or rust fungus? Been searching it all day and unsure. I did for sure give a bit too much nutrients right before this happened but I also gave those two doses of neem and possibly it didn't dry properly. Hard to believe it's rust but looks like it. They all have it.

If suggest dropping a pic in the ask us thread,I haven't encountered that before!

I think this looks similar to what I'm going through. Check at the pictures for unstable pH levels. I'm not sure if that is the diagnosis for my plants but looks like it could be.

So interesting day. I went to check for female preflowers and good news and bad news. Good news I at least have two out of four females and it's the strongest ones that are female. Quite likely three females hard to see on some still. So that was a flower I showed off before.

Bad news is I didn't want auto flower plants. Oh and rust mold but not a big deal. Just a shame this new came too late.

Plants do look stunning.
