Minnesota Patients Begin Buying Medical Marijuana

Minneapolis - Monday marks a critical juncture in Minnesota's year-old medical marijuana program: Patients suffering from constant pain can finally buy the medicine.

The expansion has been in the works since Minnesota passed its restrictive law in 2014. The bill directed the state's health commissioner to decide whether to allow intractable pain patients to qualify. A December decision set that in motion.

Judy Bjerke Severson can't wait to see whether medical marijuana offers some pain relief from fibromyalgia and back surgery complications. She says that pain has kept her homebound.

She's one of nearly 500 patients who have already registered to start buying the medication. That's more than five times as many patients who had signed up at the same point last year.
