One woman says medicinal marijuana helped her drop weight.

"The weight loss was dramatic in first 90 days to 4 months," said a 42-year-old mother of 4.

Becca Foster is a veteran yo-yo dieter since the age of 13.

Two years ago, she started something different and she has never been the same.

"I believe cannabis saved my life, it gave me back me and gave my kids back their mother," she said.

Foster says she went on a cannabis cleanse that helped her shed the weight and regain control of her body.
She cut out sugar, stopped drinking alcohol and started consuming marijuana before every meal.

"It made me slow down my eating, I felt satisfied on vegetables, good fats and meat, and I'd leave the table not feeling guilty or ashamed... cannabis helped me slow down," added Foster.

She slowed down so much she stopped exercising during the striking weight loss. She shed 80 pounds in a year and a half.

There is data that supports her transformation.

Researchers at the University of Miami published a study that tracked 13,000 marijuana users over six years. Those who consumed the drug daily had a 3 percent lower body mass index than non-users.

Professor Michael French speculated why.

"They're burning energy quicker than non-marijuana users. We also speculate that perhaps marijuana users are eating when smoking but then when they're not doing that activity they tend to eat less than non-marijuana users," said French.

But that doesn't mean a Cannabis is a miracle drug, Doctor French and his colleagues say there is more to learn.

"It's not our objective to tell people that this is a new diet strategy, because it's still illegal in many states and we're not sure about all the health effects of marijuana. There's still a lot of research to be conducted," French said.

Becca Foster also cautions that although marijuana helped with her makeover, it isn't a cure all.

I don't think everybody's journey is the same, but I think cannabis can be a healthy, nutritious alternative to pain that people have," said Foster.

Foster lives in Colorado where recreational use of marijuana is legal.

It remains illegal in Florida, although there is a measure to allow medicinal marijuana on the ballot November 8.
