I couldnt find a pic to give me an idea of how much 1 lb of rice hulls looked like. I ended up finding a cheaper source than the ebay auction i won. Each bag is about 1.1 lbs. I couldnt afford pumice and these rice hulls are a great alternative.

They work great.... the idea is to aerate soil and make it lighter .... so your soil mix will "feel" light but that's because there's a lot of air in the mix which is great for plants roots. I used rice hulls in 2 of our raised beds out side this spring... all the plants in those raised beds are still going strong even tho we had a hard freeze about a week ago and everything else in the garden is pretty much finished.

Indoors in containers I prefer to use Perl-lite.... it will never compact and its as light weight as rice hulls. Makes moving large pots around a little easier!

Rice hulls I think are better for the soil as they break down over time and nourish plants as they break down.
