Mice eating plants?

Hey gang hope all is well!!! If anyone could chime in on rather or not mice would/could dig a two inch hole and chew the stalks?? I came home from a few day trip to find a cup full of dirt beside two ladies. Both of which the stalls were chewed on good. The pic below isn't that good and I've already reapplied soil to the top of both. Minor setback but I've never seen anything like it. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Tape the wound a little with some type of tape, not too tight on, for extra support. As for the mice, try some sticky traps or get a cat that loves to catch mice more then chewing the plant itself.

In early summer I pull a trailer in my garage to force 12/12 and they have never bothered the plants. Mice are plentiful too.
