Yeah they are trying to tell you something. Your blown ballast wont help matters any. Can you provide natural sunlight till you can get it fixed? I dont like the look of your soil what kind did you use? Are you using any nutrients? Please provide as much information as you can.

[I agree with Africangrower and jonas here. There is no problem with your roots residing or hitting your water they will take what they need. Yes you have to keep the water oxygenated an air stone will correct this problem. I keep my airstone on all the time and change my water completely...
