DARTMOUTH – Police arrested an Acushnet man they say was trying to plant marijuana in the woods behind a Hathaway Road church Tuesday afternoon.

After two plainclothes officers, responding to a call reporting a suspicious person and vehicle in the Hope Evangelical Community Church's parking lot, identified themselves as police, Kenneth Bacamara, 26, of 30 Beech St., dropped a black bag that contained marijuana and ran into the woods some time after 1 p.m. He ignored police commands to stop, said Dartmouth Police Detective Robert Levinson, prompting at least 10 police officers and a canine unit to comb the woods for him, reports the Standard-Times.

Officer Derek Kenney arrested Bacamara before 2 p.m. on nearby Oakum Street. He was arrested without a struggle, Levinson said.

During the search, police said, they found a clearing where they believe Bacamara was preparing to plant marijuana. Located about 400 yards back from the parking lot, the clearing was pocked by 10 freshly dug holes.
