Hempstead County officials say dozens of jobs may be on the way as companies are looking to locate medical cannabis cultivation centers in the area.
Steve Montgomery, the Mayor of Hope, said he is not surprised by the state's vote for medical marijuana.
"It was just something that was going to come around eventually, whether its Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana... Those states, eventually, I believe will come around," Montgomery said. "The plan is to use local contractors for that. So, you're talking about a roughly 4.6 million dollar building that they are planning to put money into to build, so it's going to be a pretty substantial investment."
Hempstead County Judge Haskall Morse said, "The main thing to remember is that this is a pharmaceutical type of set up. It's not Colorado."
He points out, the state will only allow a limited number of cultivation facilities in southwest Arkansas.
Texarkana officials say cultivation facilities are looking to move there as well.
Judge Morse says, ultimately, it's up to the state, but he doesn't see Texarkana as a competitor.
"No, it hasn't been a battle thing. We've been contacted by some people about doing it and just work from there" says Morse.
Officials say medical marijuana, used properly, could be a huge gain for the county.
