The first company in Australia licensed to cultivate and manufacture medicinal cannabis is working at a closely guarded, top secret location on the Sunshine Coast.
Medifarm founder Adam Benjamin said the company had invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in security to ensure the cannabis did not fall into the wrong hands.
"We have had discussions with senior police in Queensland as well as military personnel," Mr Benjamin said.
"I cannot disclose the exact details, but there will be state-of-the art 24-hour surveillance (and) scanners to isolate and track who is on the property, supported by back-to-base alarms."
Even people in neighbouring properties have had to go through a police vetting process.
Mr Benjamin, who used to run medical clinics on the Coast, added that anyone targeting Medifarm's crop for recreational drugs would be disappointed.
"We are not growing drugs that give you a high," he said.
He declined to say how and where the cannabis would be cultivated, but it involved the natural elements and the plants would not be grown using artificial lighting.
Cannabis oil, which is supported by international clinical evidence to treat medical conditions such as pain management, epilepsy and inflammatory diseases, is expected to roll out of the secure compound early next year.
One hectare is able to produce enough medicine for 15,000 people.
Mr Benjamin said conditions for growing cannabis in Queensland were perfect, with the flower buds able to be harvested within 45 days of planting.
Medifarm is a pioneer in an industry expected to eventually be worth $100 million in Australia and $200 billion worldwide within the next four years. But Mr Benjamin said his main catalyst for the business was an eight-year-old cancer sufferer whose parents had to illicitly obtain cannabis oil to relieve the symptoms of chemotherapy.
