Guyana Middleweight boxing champion and three-time challenger for world boxing titles, Howard ‘The Battersea Bomber’ Eastman, was on Monday remanded to prison by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo when he appeared before her on the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

The charge stemmed from his arrest on April 10 at his residence Canefield Village, East Canje Berbice.

Presenting the state’s case, Prosecutor Corporal Sherlock King told the court that on the day in question the police swooped down on Eastman’s premises and conducted a search.

In the process they unearthed a plastic bag on the verandah. The contents were checked and what appeared to be leaves, seeds and stems of the marijuana plant were found inside.

Eastman was told of the offence, arrested and taken to the station where the contents were tested and weighed in his presence and found to be 100 grams of the drug.

In court the accused told the magistrate that he is a professional boxer, at present the Guyana champion and a former world title contender. He also told the court that it was not the amount and asked for bail.
Prosecutor King in opposing bail told the court that the offence is a serious one and not withstanding Eastman’s status, it was not the first time that he has been charged with an offence of such nature.

King also noted the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence.
He told the court that only in special circumstances bail should be granted.

The magistrate remanded Eastman to prison until 30 April.
