City Mulls Moratorium On Marijuana Shops

Maine's largest city is considering adopting a six-month moratorium on marijuana dispensaries to give it time to write local rules on their operation and siting.

Portland city attorney Gary Wood told the Portland Press Herald he created moratorium language so the city council could consider the need for rules, not to keep medical marijuana out of the city.

A June 21 public hearing is planned.

But an attorney with the Maine Civil Liberties Union said that when it comes to patients getting marijuana for medical needs, Portland should be the last place to stand in the way.

Voters in November approved a statewide referendum that expands Maine's medical marijuana law. It allows retail dispensaries where patients can legally buy marijuana with a doctor's prescription.
